چکیده

Small-angle neutron scattering was used to measure the effect of water-to-cement ratio (w/c) and cement batch variation on the surface area of ordinary Portland cement (OPC) paste after hydration for 28 days at room temperature, and to measure the development of surface area over the first three days of hydration at 30 ̊C. The 28 day surface area was found to increase with w/c ratio in proportion to the volume of original water-filled space available for reaction product to form. The surface areas of different batches of type I OPC were quite similar, while that of a type II OPC was some 15% lower. Early surface area development at 30 ̊C followed the heat evolution for the first 24 hours of hydration and then leveled off, suggesting that further heat evolution was associated with reaction product which added little to the surface area. These results support the theory that two different morphologies of the calcium-silicate-hydrate gel reaction product form during cement hydration.

Effects of decalcification on the microstructure and surface area of cement and tricalcium silicate pastes

Thin coupons of white portland cement (WPC) and tricalcium silicate paste were decalcified by leaching in concentrated ammonium nitrate solutions, resulting in calcium-to-silicon molar ratios (C/S) ranging from 3.0 (control) down to 0.3. The microstructure and surface area were measured using both small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) and nitrogen gas sorption. The intensity in the SANS data re...

Analysis of C–S–H gel and cement paste by small-angle neutron scattering

The role of small-angle X-ray and neutron scattering (SAXS and SANS) in the characterization of cement is briefly reviewed. The unique information obtainable from SANS analysis of C–S–H gel in hydrating cement is compared with that obtainable by other neutron methods. Implications for the nature of C–S–H gel, as detected by SANS, are considered in relation to current models. Finally, the applic...

The Nanostructure of Low-CO2 Concrete for a Sustainable Infrastructure

Executive Summary The objective of this program is to measure the changes in the properties of the C-S-H gel phase in cement paste as a function of the Ca/Si ratio. The motivation is to better understand the hydration products that form in blended cements with lower Ca/Si ratios than portland cement. The main contribution from Northwestern was to characterize specimens using small-angle neutron...

Structural studies on hydrating cement pastes

The development of the mesoscopic material structure during the hydration of ordinary Portland cement paste is studied by small-angle neutron scattering. Results on the time dependence of radii of gyration (Guinier region) and exponents (Porod region) are given and discussed. Introduction Building materials like hardened cement are heterogeneous. Their useful properties (as strength, porosity, ...

Estimation of the Elastic Properties of Important Calcium Silicate Hydrates in Nano Scale - a Molecular Dynamics Approach

Approximately, 50 to 70 percent of hydration products in hydrated cement paste are polymorphisms of C-S-H gel. It is highly influential in the final properties of hardened cement paste. Distinguishing C-S-H nano-structure significantly leads to determine its macro scale ensemble properties. This paper is dealt with nano-scale modeling. To achieve this, the most important C-S-H compounds, with a...
